What is Up-Tempo Publishing?

Up-Tempo Publishing is my independent publishing company where I create and distribute sheet music, instructional books, and educational resources for musicians, teachers, and self-learners. Every book and piece I publish is something I’ve developed through my own teaching and playing experience.

Can I preview your books and sheet music before purchasing?

Absolutely! Many of my books and sheet music collections include preview pages so you can see the format and difficulty level before purchasing. If you’re interested in a specific book and want to know more, check the Books & Music section or feel free to reach out.

Do you offer free sheet music or resources?

Yes! I provide free worksheets, exercises, and select sheet music for teachers and students. These are available in the Teachers section of the site, and I occasionally add new free materials, so check back often.

Teaching & Lessons

Do you also teach music lessons?

Yes! In addition to publishing music, I’m a full-time piano and theory instructor with over 25 years of experience. I offer live online lessons for students of all ages and skill levels.

How can I take lessons with you?

You can learn more about my piano and theory lessons by visiting my teaching studio website at www.bachtobasics.ca. I offer a free trial lesson, so if you’re interested, feel free to reach out!

Self-Publishing & Music Business

Can anyone publish music?

Yes! Anyone can publish music, but the process involves more than just uploading files to a platform. It helps to understand distribution, marketing, copyright, and networking to ensure your music reaches the right audience.

Can I publish music with little knowledge of music theory?

Yes, but it depends on the type of music you’re publishing. Some people successfully publish by ear or with basic music theory knowledge. However, having a solid foundation in music theory can enhance your compositions and help you communicate better with other musicians.

Is there more to publishing music than just putting it on different music retail platforms?

Absolutely! Successful publishing involves networking, marketing, and actively promoting your music. Building relationships with performers, music educators, and industry professionals can help get your music heard. Selling sheet music, licensing compositions, and collaborating with musicians can also expand your reach. Do you take submissions or publish music from other composers?

At this time, Up-Tempo Publishing only publishes my own compositions and educational materials, so I don’t accept outside submissions. However, I do share insights about the self-publishing process, so if you’re looking to publish your own music, you might find some helpful resources here.

How do I protect my music before publishing?

To protect your work, consider registering your compositions with a copyright office or a performing rights organization (PRO) like ASCAP, BMI, or SOCAN. Keeping dated drafts and recordings can also serve as proof of authorship. You can also register your music with the copyright office in your jurisdiction.

What are the best platforms for self-publishing music and distribution?

It depends on what you’re publishing:

Licensing & Sync: Songtradr, Pond5, or Musicbed for film and media placements.

Sheet Music: MusicNotes, Sheet Music Plus, and your own website.

Digital Audio: Bandcamp, SoundCloud, CD Baby, and DistroKid for streaming platforms.

Print Books: Amazon KDP, MyScore, and Lulu for instructional books.
